Classic Rods, With History!

If you’re in the market for something a little different you might want to consider checking these guys out. They are Old School Rods LTD and they have some very special machines up for grabs at the moment. In particular some cars owned by the lead singer of the award winning super-group Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong. There’s the Chevy Nova that’s attracting a heap of attention on Trademe at the moment:

Then there are the beasts the guys at Old School Rods and North Shore Compliance were kind enough to rumble out into the stunning autumn sunshine for me to photograph. First up is the 1961 Chevy Corvair Greenbrier Van. In its day, aside from the Corvair range being labelled as ‘Unsafe at any speed’, the Corvair Greenbrier Van was quite popular when it was released in 1960 as a direct competition to Volkswagen’s Transporter. This particular example has the alloy 6-cylinder, 2375cc engine and the rare 2-speed Powerglide automatic trans. and has been professionally restored for Billie Joe to use as a surf wagon. This could quite possibly be the only one on New Zealand’s roads so will be a real head turner! It even has Billie Joe’s signature on the glove box lid.

Next up we have my personal craving. A 1965 Chevy Suburban. Fully restored with a 350ci Oldsmobile Rocket V8, 350 auto tranny, Air con., power steering and a fully customised interior including electric front seats from a 2005 Chevy, second and third rows of removable seating and a powerful sound system including a 10”sub. The perfect family wagon here! This also has Billie Joe’s scribble on the dash.

There’s also the stunningly restored 1949 F-1 Ford Pick-up with a tonne of professional work including a 350 Chev. This is one machine that needs to seen to be appreciated. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how many hours and dollars have been spent on this beast but the asking price would only be a small fraction of that!

The boys at Old School Rods also have a hot looking black with nice flame work 1947 Chevy pick-up. But it would appear this baby has been snapped up already.
